The Creek Indians call themselves Muscogee or Muskogee Indians. The colonists of early America called them Creek Indians because they always settled their towns close to rivers and creeks. Today, the Creek Nation in Oklahoma spells their name Muscogee while those in the southeast use the spelling Muskogee.
