Where are my ancestors? This article is different from the rest. In it I will answer 3 questions that have been sent to my mail folder. Question #1. Where can I find out information about Black Indians of the Southeastern United States? Question #2 Can you find out what the addresses are for the state recognized tribes of Georgia? Question #3 Can you tell me if it's possible to establish proof of Cherokee ancestry I have no idea where to begin? The following book will help find out information about Black Indians. African American Ancestors Among the Five Civilized Tribes This book was written by Angela Y. Raja (copyright 1993) it is one of the few sources that deal exclusively with the genealogy of Black Indians. Here are the addresses for the Georgia State recognized Tribes. Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee: P.O. Box 1993, Dahlonega, Ga. 30533 Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe: Route 2, Box 370, Wigham, Ga. 31797 The Cherokee Georgia Tribal Council: Saint George, Ga. 31646 The following are just a few areas where one might begin to search for their Native American ancestors especially Cherokee ancestors. "Cherokee Roots" written by Bob Blankenship (Cherokee Native Writer). Bob is a Native American from the Eastern Band of Cherokees. Cherokee Roots is a set of volumes narrating Cherokee history. Volume 1 was written to assist people in their search for their Cherokee roots. The first edition was limited to the Cherokee rolls after their removal. However the second edition covers twelve separate Federal rolls of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Volume 11 covers expanded Cherokee rolls along with the 1924 Baker roll which is used to determine membership of the Eastern Band Cherokee . Cherokee ancestors can also be found in a collection of historical essays of eleven counties in the Cherokee nation , compiles by Don L. Shadburn.
