PCMCIA PAGE 1

Most people do not know what the word PCMCIA means so here it is.

Definition: It is an abbreviation for (Personal Computer Memory Card

International Association.) Now you know. Glad we could help.

There are three types of PCMCIA card standards, plus a fourth that comes from Toshiba.

Type I is already obsolete and only catered for memory cards. Type II cards are a little thicker

and the standard covers connections for all the types of add-ons such as modems, Ethernet scsi

and USB stuff. Type III is twice as thick as Type II - often you can fit one Type III card into a slot

that also takes two Type II cards

Caution: most older laptops have a 16 bit bus PCMCIA card slot all of the newer laptops usually

200 MHZ or higher have a 32 bit PCMCIA card slot called CardBus. You cannot put Cardbus

cards in a 16 bit slot it cannot read them.

The Cardbus PCMCIA card always has a gold ribbed edge where it plugs into the PCMCIA slot.

The 16 bit card does not.
