Laptop Hard
drives
One of our most popular
items is laptop hard drives. We get several calls and emails
everyday requesting laptop drives.
We try to keep about 50 to
60 drives in stock at all times. Sometimes this is not
possible and we have to order the drives.
For special orders we
require a 50 % deposit in advance before we order the drive.
Most older laptops 286 and
386 have special hard drives that are becoming harder and
harder to find. The majority of these use 200 to 320 meg
drives.
Some 486 machines such as
the NEC versa will only take up to 810 meg drive. Many of the
486 versa machines will not go any higher than 320 megs. The
majority of 486 laptops will go up to 540 with no problem.
Several models such as
Toshiba and IBM 486 machines can hold a drive as big as 2
gigs. For the larger capacity drives in older 486 laptops you
will probably need to use a disk manager program that has a
Dynamic Disk Overlay.

Almost all of
the Pentium machines can use anything from 1 to 2 gigs with no
problems. Several low end machines will hold 4 gig drives with
no problems.
The Toshiba low end
Pentium machines will go as high as 5.5 gig but cannot use a 6
gig drive.
The same is true with the
majority of the IBM ThinkPad series low end Pentiums. Some of
the ones 166MHZ and higher will go as high as 6 gig.
The majority of laptops
around the 200MHZ range max out at 6 to 8 gig hard drives.
There is an exception to this rule.
The IBM 770 model will
use 25 gig drives with no problems at all. Many of the new
laptops in the 400 and up range max out at 12 gig
drives.
Those with newer bios
flashes will go up to 20 gigs with no problem. Currently all
of your high end laptops 750 and up can use 20 to 30 gig
drives and probably higher.
Many hard drives need
special caddy's to mount in certain laptops.
Our caddy's range from
$22 to as much as $65 depending on make and model of laptop.
